From Phil Foglio's Girl Genius, which is one of those entirely online and free wonders and delights[1] (yes, first issue's B&W):

This is by no means the best or the funniest or even the most well-drawn panel he's done, but right now it completely clicks.

...s'help me god, I'm at the point of buying an LJ account just so I can get more icons.

Wedding in two days. Oddly calm.

[1] I mean it. This setting is so cool they can actually talk about having a GURPS sourcebook for it and I don't flinch. Given that my first exposure to GURPS had me wanting to print out and burn the quickstart rules, this is a feat. I mean yes, it's steampunk, and I have a soft spot for that, but still...

Man, I am in the exact same boat where that's concerned.

*nods* It's the geek in me. I want at least one of Nicodemus Whateley, dammit.

More icons are the main reason why I have a paid account, but there are quite a few other paid account benefits that make it worth it as well - being able to post polls, voiceposts (though I very rarely make those), faster pageloading, no ads anywhere, and so on. I've been a happy paid customer of LJ for four and a half years.

There are ads?

You don't need a paid livejournal account to avoid ads. I see no ads. Anywhere. Ever.

There is an account level called "Plus" which has most of the benefits of a paid account, but for free, and in return you put ads on your journal. Free users viewing the journal would see ads, but paid users don't. Whether you see them or not would depend on the people whose journals you view. I don't think I know anyone with a Plus account.

I have a free account, and I don't see ads on plus accounts.

I don't see ads on plus accounts when I'm not logged in, either.

Paying to avoid advertising is always a losing practice, like unsubscribing from spam. It just encourages more advertising, which you would then need to pay more to avoid. I simple kill all the advertising outright before it loads.

This is great for you, and I also see no ads when using any civilized browser, but some of us want to hit LJ on our lunch hours and cannot install the aforementioned civilized browser (or HOSTS file) on the networked machines at work.

Obviously, you need a better job.

(Portable firefox handles extensions. I'm just sayin'.)

I know it does. I just don't bring my USB key to work every day.

But I so need a better job, in that I need one that doesn't have Dell's ha-ha-crawl-around-under-the-desk-and-plug-the-USB-key-in-by-feel-at-a-freakish-angle-bitch PCs.

So, let's theorize that I'm using one of these civilized browsers and have learned how to block ads (something I don't currently know how to do, but am certain I can learn) and I get a Plus account, will I then avoid seeing my own ads? Because I think I could be content with that compromise, since icons are all that I want from a paid account at this present juncture.

*finds someone with a Plus account and triple-checks*

Should be able to, yeah. All the ads come off the same server, so if you block one you block all.

Which browser/OS are you using?
Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 03:51 pm (UTC)
OS: Windows XP
Browser: Firefox

Ah. It's easy, then; you can use the Adblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10) extension. (I just go to a Plus profile page and adblock the first item in the Adblock popup list, the script at http://www.livejournal.com/js/??core.js,dom.js,httpreq.js,livejournal.js,common/AdEngine.js* (well, it doesn't have an asterisk, but I delete everything after AdEngine.js and put in an asterisk).

It's handy. (I don't use Plus ATM because other people would then see ads on my site, and that annoys me.)

The polls and voiceposts are a non-issue for me, and the pageloading time doesn't bug me. I also don't see any ads from anywhere except a non-civilized machine, so that's not really a buying point for me. (Mind you, the ads *would* annoy the hell out of me if I went to Plus, which is why I'm avoiding it.)

So it's just the icons, and I'm never quite sure if they're worth it...

Icons? 6 should be enough for everyone!

Hold on with that, there's going to be a Permanent Accounts sale any time soon. I can have 137 userpics now, would that be enough?

Crazy thing is, I actually have 6.

Congratulations and many blessings to the both of you!!

I am totally Cos-playing as Agatha at Marcon this weekend.

I will post pics later.

Also, congrats, and try not to let things stress you too much this weekend.

Whoo! Pics!

Was doing fine on the no-stress until I *just* found out the florist has had stuff go missing.
