Still haven't gotten my copy of The Willows. Not worried yet, but starting to miss it.

Spent most of yesterday reading up on quantum physics. I feel like the last panel of that Calvin and Hobbes strip; the one where Calvin's dad has explained that a point on the outside of the record completes the same number of revolutions as one closer to the center, but is actually moving much faster. And Calvin is just lying there, little icons of bafflement floating around his head.

Apparently the local magazine store won't be carrying Weird Tales (couldn't meet the distributor's minimum order); neither will my preferred comic book shop. A subscription is in order. (Probably the one that gets me H.P. Lovecraft's Magazine of Horror.)

(Jesus, was *everyplace* I'm moderately interested in mentioning the Dances of Vice festival? Some other year.)

Finished Old Man's War by John Scalzi (the fourth book (not counting one magazine) I've finished since the move; the commute to work is proving to have unexpected advantages). Very fast read, well-written. I can definitely see the Heinlein influence, although honestly I keep thinking more of Haldeman's The Forever War (given that I preferred that to Starship Troopers, this probably constitutes a compliment). Expect to read the sequel.

Not to discourage a subscriber in the making, but -- your comic shop won't special-order Weird Tales from the Diamond Previews catalog? Any explanation as to why not?

...I must confess I made an assumption.

Apparently the magazine store couldn't get Weird Tales because they couldn't meet the minimum order size for the distributor; the same employee who explained this also told me that the distributor had said it'd be available in Ottawa through the Comic Book Shoppe and Silver Snail.

When I went to CBS and they didn't have it, and searches through the list of comics to add it to my subscription basket only turned up Weird Western Tales, I assumed (possibly foolishly) that they simply couldn't get it in for me.

I may call them back and ask. That said, I think I'll still go with the subscription (and then start picking up back issues; straightening out the "why can't you get copies?" with the local magazine store actually took several months (in my defense, I will note that there were several things going on during said months which kind of captured my attention)).

You're welcome for the interest; I've been fond of Weird Tales for ages. (If you don't mind my asking--how on earth did you find this post?)

Is this the January issue that you've not gotten? Because I got mine quite awhile back, so you might want to drop Ben an email and double-check. I still need to read it, but I also need to read the November issue, which I seem to have misplaced.

I picked up a subscription to Weird Tales when they were having their introductory special price dealy a couple months back. I got my first issue, but haven't read it yet (are we sensing a pattern?). Too many books!

I remember noticing you mentioning it. I figure that if it hasn't come in the mail by tomorrow evening (since I expect to be busy tonight) I'll fire off an e-mail.

I'm catching up like crazy on books now. And I think the fact that I cancelled a few comic subscriptions is only going to help.

You absolutely need to read the November issue; "Sophia Athanatos" is wonderful. (I also need to reply to someone who asked me about that... augh, my e-correspondence backlog is inflating. :P )
